Day 1

On Tuesday, travelers will depart for Egypt.

Day 2

Once arrived in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, you’ll transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Day 3

Travelers will get their day started by heading to Old Cairo in the morning. Old Cairo is the original home of the Coptic Christians, one of the world’s oldest Christian denominations. Travelers will get to visit the Hanging Church (built in the 7^th century), Abu Serga (believed to be where the Holy Family took refuge in Egypt), a Jewish synagogue, and one the oldest mosques in Cairo, Ibn Tulun. After seeing all these religious sites, stop at a local perfume shop, where you’ll explore a diverse collection of traditional and exotic scents, while learning about the art of perfume making. Lastly in the late afternoon, embark on a walking tour that takes you through Cairo’s historic center.

Day 4

This morning, get ready to visit the iconic Pyramids of Giza, built during the 3rd and 4th dynasties of the Old Kingdom. Get an up-close view of the Great Pyramid, built for the Pharaoh Khufu, as well as the Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure. That’s not all, you’ll also be able to view the great Sphinx of Giza, the legendary statue with the head of a human and the body of a lion, amazingly carved out of a single piece of limestone. First visit the Roman amphitheater, then continue to the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, a necropolis hewn into a cliff that consists of 3 levels, dating from the 2nd century AD. Finish with viewing the Roman triclinium, a funeral banquet hall to honor the dead. Then visit the Royal Jewelry Museum, where you’ll view precious artifacts, jewels, and jewelry of the Muhammad Ali Dynasty that ruled Egypt from 19th to the mid-20th century. Day 6

Today is where you’ll visit another city, Memphis. Memphis was the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom, founded by Pharaoh Menes around 3100 BC. Today, the city stands as an open-air museum highlighted by a giant statue of Ramses II. Then, continue to Sakkara, the site of hundreds of tombs where you’ll view the famous Step Pyramid of Djoser, considered to be the oldest pyramid in Egypt. After seeing these ancient landmarks, stop for lunch at a local restaurant, followed by a visit to carpet shop in the surrounding area. Finish the day by exploring Khan El Khalili Bazaar, Cairo’s most famous souk. Established in the 14th century, this vibrant market is a treasure trove of traditional crafts, jewelry, spices, textiles, antiques, and souvenirs.

Day 7

Travelers can spend this day at leisure in Cairo or join the optional Full Day Luxor with Flights. First transfer to the airport to get to Luxor. On arrival, you’ll begin the exploration of the magnificent West Bank. Day 1

On Tuesday, travelers will depart for Greece.

Day 2

The next day, travelers will arrive in Athens. You’ll meet our representative to connect to your domestic flight to Heraklion, capital city of Crete. Once you’ve touched down in Heraklion, arrive and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure, until 7 PM, where you’ll begin an orientation meeting with your Tour Manager. Gate 1 Travel highly recommends that you select a flight that will arrive no later than 4:30 PM.

Day 3

The next day, embark on a walking tour of Heraklion. Travelers will get to view the harbor, the Venetian fortress of Koules, the Byzantine Church of Saint Titus, and Lions Square. Once finished with that, visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, boasting a magnificent collection of artifacts from the Minoan civilization including finds from Knossos, dating back to the Bronze Age. Walk through exhibits covering over 5,000 years of Crete’s history. The rest of your afternoon is at leisure.

Day 4

Today, travel west through the scenic Cretan countryside to the historic town of Rethymnon. Begin at the heart of Rethymnon’s Old Town, a labyrinth of narrow streets and Venetian architecture. View the imposing Fortezza, a 16th century fortress perched atop a hill overlooking the sea, and the Rimondi Fountain, a symbol of the town’s Venetian heritage. Then, visit the workshop of Giorgos Hatziparaschos, a traditional phyllo master, renowned for making ultra-thin phyllo dough by hand. Observe a demonstration and admire the precision and skill of the artisan. Conclude with tasting freshly baked phyllo dough pastries. If you do participate in the tour, you’ll board a ferry to Santorini in the morning. First begin with a visit to the famous clifftop village of Oia. Then stroll along the picturesque narrow alleys and marvel at its blue-domed churches, white-washed cave-like houses, and astonishing views. Conclude the tour at Fira, the capital of Santorini. Travelers will get to wander through the famous pebbled streets of the island before boarding the ferry back to Crete.

Finally return to Heraklion and enjoy your free time this afternoon by relaxing on one of the sandy beaches along the Mediterranean before dinner tonight.

Day 7

Travelers can spend this day at leisure in Heraklion or join Gate 1 Travel’s optional Chania tour. Start your day across Crete’s northern coast before arriving in Chania. Along the way, stop at the ancient site of Aptera, offering sweeping views over Souda Bay, home to the U.S. Naval Support Air Force base. Once arrived in Chania, explore the old town, a maze of narrow lanes lined with Venetian, Ottoman, and Neoclassical architecture. When people think of Christmas, they tend to think of the beautiful lights, classic holiday songs, or the iconic wrapping paper used to hide the gifts. For many cultures, though, what really brings the holiday together is the food! These delicious seasonal treats are often reserved for this special season, making their way onto menus and dinner tables each December. Gingerbread

Everyone is familiar with this treat, but do you know about Latvian gingerbread? Latvian gingerbread, known as piparkūkas (pepper cakes), is a thin, and crunchy Christmas treat that is heavily spiced with pepper, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom. Baking them is a major national tradition, often involving homemade dough or a customized store-bought dough. Locals traditionally shape them into stars, hearts, and animals. Though Latvian gingerbread is mainly made at home, almost every supermarket and bakery in Latvia sells the dough during the holiday season.

Viennese Sacher Torte

Sacher Torte is a famous Viennese chocolate cake with a dense, rich crumb, traditionally filled with a thin layer of apricot jam and covered in a dark chocolate glaze, often served with unsweetened whipped cream. This delicious treat was invented by Franz Sacher in 1832, he was only 16 at the time.

Making the cake is quite simple: First bake a traditional chocolate cake and wait until it cools. Then once that is done, slice horizontally, then spread the apricot jam between the layers and/or over the top. Next, pour a warm, sugar-syrup-based chocolate glaze over the entire cake in one quick motion. Last, allow the glaze to set.

Lebkuchen

Lebkuchen is a traditional German, cake-like gingerbread cookie that dates to the 13^th century, often enjoyed during Christmas. This treat was originally created by Franconian monks using honey, spices, and nuts. These soft treats are frequently baked on edible wafers. Famous for being produced in Nuremberg, they are often glazed in chocolate or sugar. The earliest records of Lebkuchen date to 1296 in Ulm and 1395 in Nuremberg.

Lebkuchen comes with some variety, able to be made in several different ways. Elisenlebkuchen is a nut-heavy version. It features no flour (or very little) and is often considered the best version. When making this treat, it tends to be frequently covered in dark chocolate, milk chocolate, or white sugar icing. Last is Aachener Printen, this is a firmer type of Lebkuchen, it’s often made using beet sugar syrup.
