Everything about this river cruise was Five Star! The cabin was much larger than I remember from before, with plenty of cupboard and drawer space, and the bathroom more generous in size than I remember. The meals were all top-notch and the servers and crew were all amazing. They were skilled, but also cheerful and willing to do anything to make us feel relaxed and having a good time. And our tour manager made everything such fun.

Day 1

On Tuesday, travelers will depart for Greece.

Day 2

The next day, travelers will arrive in Athens. You’ll meet our representative to connect to your domestic flight to Heraklion, capital city of Crete. Once you’ve touched down in Heraklion, arrive and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure, until 7 PM, where you’ll begin an orientation meeting with your Tour Manager. Gate 1 Travel highly recommends that you select a flight that will arrive no later than 4:30 PM.

Day 3

The next day, embark on a walking tour of Heraklion. Travelers will get to view the harbor, the Venetian fortress of Koules, the Byzantine Church of Saint Titus, and Lions Square. Once finished with that, visit the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, boasting a magnificent collection of artifacts from the Minoan civilization including finds from Knossos, dating back to the Bronze Age. Walk through exhibits covering over 5,000 years of Crete’s history. The rest of your afternoon is at leisure.

Day 4

Today, travel west through the scenic Cretan countryside to the historic town of Rethymnon. Begin at the heart of Rethymnon’s Old Town, a labyrinth of narrow streets and Venetian architecture. View the imposing Fortezza, a 16th century fortress perched atop a hill overlooking the sea, and the Rimondi Fountain, a symbol of the town’s Venetian heritage. Then, visit the workshop of Giorgos Hatziparaschos, a traditional phyllo master, renowned for making ultra-thin phyllo dough by hand. Observe a demonstration and admire the precision and skill of the artisan. Conclude with tasting freshly baked phyllo dough pastries. Lastly, head to Melidoni Cave (available April – October) a geological wonder steeped in myth and legend. Admire the rock-formations and underground chambers before returning to your hotel.

Day 5

Today is free to explore Heraklion at your own pace, or you can join the optional full day Santorini tour (available May – October). If you do participate in the tour, you’ll board a ferry to Santorini in the morning. First begin with a visit to the famous clifftop village of Oia. Then stroll along the picturesque narrow alleys and marvel at its blue-domed churches, white-washed cave-like houses, and astonishing views. Conclude the tour at Fira, the capital of Santorini. Travelers will get to wander through the famous pebbled streets of the island before boarding the ferry back to Crete.

Gate 1 Travel also offers another optional full day tour (available November – April) where you’ll visit Gergeri & the Zaros Villages with Olive Mill. Start this tour by traveling through the picturesque landscapes of Crete to Gergeri Village to visit the Women’s Pastry Cooperative. They’ll treat you to some freshly baked sweets with coffee. Next, head to Zaros Village, located on the foothills of Mount Psiloritis. Explore the village known for its trout farms and pristine Lake Zaros. In the afternoon, tour the family-run Olive Mill to learn about the olive-oil making process, from harvesting the olives to pressing and production techniques that have been passed down through generations. View the groves and mill, then enjoy an olive oil tasting featuring locally produced extra virgin olive oils, celebrated for their distinctive flavor and aroma. Once finished, head back to your hotel.

Day 6

If you’re a history buff, then today is for you. Begin your day by exploring the ruins of the great Palace of Knossos, the ceremonial and political center of the ancient Minoan civilization and residence of the mythical King Minos. As you wander through the labyrinthine ruins, view the original throne of Minos, the mystifying sanctuaries, and the luxurious domestic quarters of the royal family. Continue to the picturesque village of Archanes, located on the slopes of Mt. Giouchtas. The village is famous for its typical Cretan architecture. Then visit a winery to learn about traditional winemaking and enjoy the taste of local wines. Finally return to Heraklion and enjoy your free time this afternoon by relaxing on one of the sandy beaches along the Mediterranean before dinner tonight.

Day 7

Travelers can spend this day at leisure in Heraklion or join Gate 1 Travel’s optional Chania tour. Start your day across Crete’s northern coast before arriving in Chania. Along the way, stop at the ancient site of Aptera, offering sweeping views over Souda Bay, home to the U.S. Naval Support Air Force base. Once arrived in Chania, explore the old town, a maze of narrow lanes lined with Venetian, Ottoman, and Neoclassical architecture. Stroll along the 14th-century Venetian harbor, with its lighthouse and waterfront cafes, and discover the covered market bustling with local produce, crafts, and traditional delicacies. Enjoy free time for lunch at one of the many seaside tavernas. Then return to Heraklion in the late afternoon.

Day 8

Spend your last day in Heraklion at your leisure or join Gate 1 Travel’s optional Spinalonga Boat tour. Travelers will start their day with a boat ride to the island of Spinalonga, with its 16th century Venetian fortress. Tour the island and then head to Elounda, a former fishing village, located at the Gulf of Mirabello for lunch and exploration. In the afternoon, travel to Agios Nikolaos. View Lake Voulismeni and take a walking tour of the town, before returning to Heraklion. Tonight, at dinner bid farewell to your Tour Manager.

Day 9

Transfer to the airport for the flight back to Athens and connect to your international departure flight. Passengers should select flights that depart Athens no earlier than 12 PM

2026 FIFA World Cup: A Tournament to Remember

The 2026 World Cup was one for the ages. 16 different host cities,104 matches played, 308 goals scored, all in just 39 days. Cape Verde became the people’s champs, superstars emerged into global names such as Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, and America turned into a soccer nation for over six weeks. Not only that, but some of the most dominant soccer nations made their mark on this World Cup as well.

Spain

Spain defeated Argentina on July 19 at Metlife Stadium to win the nation’s second ever World Cup. The Spanish nullified Argentina’s attack as they shut them out in a 1-0 win in extra time. Spain was so dominant at one point that Argentina never even had a shot in the first 90 minutes. This is the first time ever that a team in FIFA World Cup final history has done this. After departing the U.S., Spain went home and celebrated in Madrid. Up to 2 million people came out to show the team their support, as the team finished their celebrations with a stage ceremony at Cibeles Square.

Argentina

Though Argentina had won the 2022 World Cup, they were not the favorites heading into the tournament this year. That slowly changed as the team continued to take out foe after foe in dramatic fashion. Led by their captain, Lionel Messi, the team fought all the way to the final match. The 39-year-old finished with 8 goals and 4 assists in 8 World Cup matches, continuing to cement himself as an all-time great in the sport. Some thought he’d get his final wish by winning back-to-back World Cups (something that has only been done twice by Italy and Brazil), but that was not the case. The team finally met its match when playing Spain. Though the team was disappointed, fans showed up to a parade in Buenos Aires to show support.

England

It has been 60 years since England won their only World Cup in 1966, many thought it would finally be coming home this summer after the team knocked out Norway 2-1 in extra time. England’s main star in this World Cup was Jude Bellingham. The 23-year-old midfielder had a breakout campaign, as he finished with 7 goals (a new single-edition national record). And it wasn’t just the number of goals he scored; it was the importance of them as well. Bellingham bagged 2 goals vs Mexico in the infamous Azteca Stadium known for it’s homefield advantage. He also scored another two against Norway, the second being the extra-time winner that sent England to their fourth semi-final match. Many England fans thought this was the year, but tragedy struck against Argentina. England were up 1-0 by the 55^th minute, but the manager, Thomas Tuchel, decided to play a more defensive formation resulting in mass amounts of criticism. By playing more defensive, Tuchel subbed off numerous attackers for defenders hoping it would be enough for England to advance. To much time was left as Argentina scored two late minute goals to win 2-1 to send them to the final. England would go on to defeat France, 6-4, in the third-place match.

France

France were the favorites heading into this World Cup, and rightfully so. The nation had won the tournament in 2018, then losing it narrowly to Argentina in the 2022 final. The 2026 French team was led by Kilian Mbappe. Mbappe has been the face of the French national team since he broke out as a 19-year-old in the 2018 tournament. Mbappe backed up all the hype as he finished a historic 10-goal tournament campaign, breaking the all-time career record with 22 total World Cup goals. After defeating Morocco 2-0 in the Quarterfinals, France had become the public favorite to win the entire tournament, thanks to Mbappe and the rest of the star-studded French attack. That all came to a halting stop against Spain. Spain controlled the game like they did all tournament, which helped them advance 2-0 vs France. Though this World Cup will be considered a failure for France, the team still has a bright future as Mbappe doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Exploring the History of National Flags Around the Globe

National flags are more than colorful symbols, they tell the stories of a country’s history, values, and identity. From ancient traditions, cultural beliefs, and national unity, each flag carries a unique meaning that has evolved over time. As countries get ready for the World Cup and the United States preps for Flag Day (6/14/2026), learning about these iconic banners offers travelers a deeper appreciation for the destinations they visit.

The Stars and Stripes: The Flag of the United States

On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed an act establishing an official flag for the new nation. The resolution stated: “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation”. Today, the flag consists of 13 horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with six white. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.

Eventually on August 3, 1949, President Harry S. Truman officially declared June 14 as Flag Day. To celebrate, many Americans will hang the country’s flag outside of their homes, making sure it’s highly visible above any other flag to show significance.

The Union Jack: A Symbol of Unity

The UK’s flag is commonly known as the Union Jack, originating in 1606 when King James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne. The main components of the flag contain the patron saint flags of England (St. George), and Scotland (St. Andrew). In 1801, the cross of St. Patrick was added to represent Ireland. St. George’s cross is red on a white background and was officially adopted in the 13^th century. St. Andrew has a white diagonal cross on a blue background, representing Scotland’s patron saint. St. Patrick’s cross was incorporated into the flag following the 1801 Act of Union between Great Britain and Ireland.

The flag was designed to symbolize the political and historic union of the nation that make up the United Kingdom. Though England, Scotland, and Ireland are featured in the flag’s design, Wales is not. This is because the original version of the flag was created in 1606 and Wales was already annexed and united the Kingdom of England under the Laws in Wales Acts.

The Maple Leaf: Canada’s National Emblem

Canada’s modern flag wasn’t established until 1965. Other versions of the flag existed, but after World War II, Canadians wanted a distinctive flag for the country. The Canadian Red Ensign (Canada’s de facto national from 1892-1965) was recognized for use on government buildings and as a national flag abroad, but many felt it didn’t properly identify the distinctive local culture and traditions. After much public and parliamentary debate, the new Maple Leaf Flag was approved in December 1964. The flag became officially by royal proclamation of February 15, 1965. Many thought the maple leaf was a great choice to be featured on the flag as it had been Canada’s national symbol since 1868. The red color featured is described as a symbol of Canadian sacrifice during World War I.

Japan’s Rising Sun Tradition

Japan’s modern flag originates from the Japanese tradition, where the sun goddess Amaterasu founded Japan in 7^th century BC and was an ancestor of the first emperor, Jimmu. The emperor is known as the “Son of the Sun”, and a popular name for Japan is “Land of the Rising Sun”. The first evidence that testifies to use of a sun flag for Japan dates from 1184, but there are oral traditions going back centuries earlier.

The current flag was officially adopted on August 5, 1854, when Japan was starting to open to commerce and diplomatic relations with European countries. The flag’s use was slowly accepted by the general population; the principal use of the flag in its early days was to represent ships and the diplomatic service of Japan abroad.

France and the Spirit of Revolution

Under the ancient regime, France had several flags, and many of its military and naval flags were elaborate and subject to artistic variations. The royal coat of arms, a blue shield with three golden fleurs-de-lis, was the basis for the state flag.

After the French Revolution of 1789, the flag was refocused to have a simple design that expressed the radical changes being introduced into France’s social, political, and economic life. Blue and red were used as they are the traditional colors of Paris, they also were popular among revolutionaries in the city. Then the Bourbon royal white was added. The revolutionaries took inspiration from the horizontally striped, red-white-blue flag of the Netherlands, which appeared in the mid-17^th-century. By 1790, three equal vertical stripes, arranged red-white-blue within a frame of the same colors, were added to the white flag of the navy. Four years later, the flag was made the official national flag for the common people, army, and navy. The flag embodied the principles of the revolution, liberty, equality, fraternity, democracy, secularism, and modernization.

Brazil’s Banner of Progress

Brazil’s flag originally dates to the Napoleonic Wars when the Portuguese royal family resided in Brazil. On September 7, 1822, Dom Pedro proclaimed the country’s independence. Brazil’s original flag consisted of a green background with a yellow diamond and the imperial coat of arms in the center, incorporating a star for each of the Brazilian states. The colors of the flag were associated with the verdure of the land and with Brazil’s great mineral wealth.

Brazil’s flag was had numerous modifications made over the years. The modern-day version has been around since May 12, 1992. The 27 stars of the flag now collectively symbolize Brazil’s 26 states and its federal district.

It will be running from June 11^th to July 19^th, featuring a record 48 teams across 16 cities. The final will be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, right outside of New York City. In several cities, including Boston, Philadelphia, Kansas City, San Francisco, and Seattle, many hotel operators are saying that bookings are running behind typical seasonal demand. In New York City, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Houston, hotel demand has been flat compared with regular spring and summer, according to the association.

This is the perfect time to book a hotel if you haven’t yet! Take advantage of this before the tournament starts – when prices are expected to rise due to last minute demand.

Choose the Right Host Cities

Another key part of this planning process is deciding which city to visit. This is key, not only because of what each city offers when it comes to transportation, entertainment, food, but also which teams you’ll be able to see play.

If you’re not familiar already, the World Cup is broken into stages. The beginning of the World Cup starts with the group stage. It has all 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. Each team plays three group opponents in a round-robin style, resulting in the top two teams of each group advancing into the Round of 32. Last, the eight third-place teams across the 12 groups with the most points also advance to the Round of 32.

Once the Round of 32 starts, the World Cup proceeds with single elimination matches culminating in the tournament final on Sunday, July 19^th.

Since the knockout stages have yet to be determined, the best way to guarantee seeing a specific team play is to watch them in the group stage.

Stadium Transportation

New York City/New Jersey (MetLife Stadium): No general parking. Dedicated NYNJ Stadium Shuttle buses will operate from Port Authority, Midtown East (NYC), and specialized park-and-ride locations in New Jersey. Train tickets from Manhattan are estimated at $150 round-trip.
Philadelphia (Lincoln Financial Field): Free, direct transportation is available to ticket holders on SEPTA trains after games, specifically running from NRG Station on the Broad Street Line.
Atlanta (Mercedes-Benz Stadium): MARTA subway lines offer two stops with a 5-minute walk to the stadium. The bus network has also been redesigned with new Bus Rapid Transit lines.
Los Angeles (SoFi Stadium): LA Metro will operate direct, non-stop match day shuttle buses from nine location around Los Angeles for $1.75 per ride ($3.50 roundtrip), running every 10 minutes starting four hours before matches. No on-site parking is allowed without a pre-paid pass.
Seattle (Lumen Field): Transportation options consist of Link light rail, special Sounder trains, and Free Match Day shuttles. Since the stadium is in downtown Seattle, major street closures and limited parking are expected on match days.
San Francisco (Levi Stadium): fans are encouraged to use public transit, including BART (with special late-night service), Caltrain connecting to VTA Light Rail, and ACE trains. Dedicated ride-share (Uber/Lyft/Waymo) zones, pre-booked parking, and private charter shuttles (like Rally) are also available for, or near, the stadium in Santa Clara.
Arlington (AT&T Stadium): The primary, recommended transportation is a dedicated rail-to-shuttle system: take the Trinity Railway Express (TRE) to CentrePort Station, then use complimentary charter buses to a stadium bus hub, followed by a 10-minute walk.
Houston (NRG Stadium): The most efficient transport is the METRORail Red Line, which drops passengers directly at the stadium, with trains running every 6 minutes during peak times. METRO is expanding service until midnight, with increased, affordable, and secure options.
Kansas City (GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium): A new streetcar extension is planned, along with free bus shuttles from the airport downtown, and specialized match-day shuttles to the stadium.
Boston (Gillette Stadium): MBTA Boston Stadium Train service will take you directly to and from each World Cup match. Tickets will be $80. The Boston Stadium Express (Official Bus Service) is offering round-trip travel for $95 per person from over 20 locations. After arriving, fans will take a 10-minute walk to the stadium.
Miami (Hard Rock Stadium): Miami will heavily prioritize four designated, free “Game Day Express” shuttle hubs for ticket holders. Key options include dedicated shuttles from Aventura Brightline Station, Golden Glades (Tri-Rail), Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Plaza (Metrorail), and Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, alongside on-site rideshare and limited parking.

The festival begins with Holika Dahan, a night of bonfires symbolizing the destruction of evil. The following day, known as Rangwali Holi or Dhuleti, involves joyfully applying colored powders and water to friends and family.

The significance of the Holi festival in India commemorates the legend of Prahlad’s devotion to Vishnu and the burning of the demoness Holika. It also celebrates the divine, playful love of Radha and Krishna. The different colors featured in the festival all have individual meanings. Red (love), blue (Krishna), Green (new beginnings), and yellow (turmeric/auspiciousness). Participants often wear white, enjoying traditional foods like gujiya and thandai, and celebrate in the streets with music and drums.

Songkran: Thailand’s Famous Water Festival

Songkran, the Thai New Year and world’s biggest water fight, is celebrated annually in Thailand from April 13-15 as a time of renewal, purification, and family reunion. The purpose of the festival is to celebrate after the rice harvest to mark the sun’s passage into Aries. This represents a spiritual cleaning to welcome the New Year with good fortune.

The festival has evolved into city-wide water battles, particularly in Bangkok and Chiang Mai, involving both tourists and locals. If you’re planning on participating in Songkran, tourists must follow these rules. Make sure to wear bright floral shirts (Songkran shirts), use waterproof bags, and bring a small change just in case. Do not pour water on monks, infants, or the elderly.

Cherry Blossom Season in Japan

Hanami is a Japanese tradition of celebrating spring by holding picnics and parties under blooming cherry blossom trees (Sakura). This typically occurs between late March and early April, signifying new beginnings. Locals will gather for food and drinks to enjoy the beautiful scenes, often extending into illuminated night viewing (Yozakura).

This iconic blossom moves from Southern Japan to Northern Japan. The top locations to see this gorgeous view include Hirosaki Park, Maruyama Park, and the Yoshino area. Some tips for travelers visiting the blossom are to get to the spots early, many locals have spots reserved hours in advance. Also, do not pick the blossoms from the trees, it is strictly prohibited.

Las Fallas in Valencia

The Fallas of Valencia, Spain is a UNESCO listed festival held annually from March 15-19 to welcome spring. It features hundreds of giant, satirical, papier-mâché sculptures called fallas and smaller ninots erected throughout the city. The celebration hits its peak with a “La Cremà”, where these artistic monuments are burned, symbolizing purification, renewal, and a fiery start to the new season.

This tradition dates to the 18^th century, originating from local carpenters burning old wood and remnants on the feast day of their patron saint, Saint Joseph, to welcome spring. Though the main events are from the 15-19, celebrations occur starting on the first day of March. Every day from the 1^st to the 19^th, synchronized firecracker displays go off at 2 PM in Valencia’s Town Hall Square.
