Travel Tips: FAQs About Traveling with Kids

Traveling with children can be a great opportunity to bring families closer by having unique experiences. However, planning a trip with them often brings questions, extra stress, and added costs. With proper preparation, you and your family can have the trip you want. Gate 1 Family Tours are specially designed with these unique challenges and opportunities in mind! Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about traveling with kids.

What Is the Best Age to Start Traveling with Children?

There is no single “best age” to start traveling with children, since each kid is different: that’s for your family to decide. Children of all ages can all enjoy travel of some variety, but their needs and interests will differ greatly across age groups. Younger children may benefit from shorter outings closer to home, while older kids may gravitate towards more adventurous activities and be up for a longer flight. Keep this in mind, Gate 1 Family Tours are domestic and international itineraries built for families traveling with children ages 7-17. Choose a trip that best fits your child’s temperament, interests, and comfort level. Things you might want to look for when you’re browsing itineraries include length of bus rides, amount of walking, and hotel accommodations that will best match your family’s needs.

How Do I Choose a Family-Friendly Destination?

Consider travel time, climate, available transportation and restrooms, food options, available activities, and how easy it will be to meet your family’s needs. Destinations with interactive attractions, outdoor spaces, wildlife experiences, and cultural activities can appeal to children while still offering plenty for adults to enjoy. It is also helpful to consider how much moving between hotels a trip requires and whether the itinerary allows time to rest. Our 10 Day Paris & London Family Tour is a great option to consider if you’re worried about going between too many cities in one trip. This tour offers two central hotels – one in Paris and one in London – with enough time to explore these iconic cities perfectly suited for first-time travelers of all ages!

How Far in Advance Should I Plan a Family Vacation?

At a minimum, planning several months ahead is helpful for international trips. Early planning gives you more time to compare itineraries, arrange flights and accommodations, and confirm documentation. And when it comes to traveling with kids, this can be especially important as you work around school and extra-curricular activities schedules. With this in mind, Gate 1 Family Tours are specifically planned for departures at times that schools are usually on break, with an effort to further meet our family travelers’ needs.

What Should I Pack When Traveling with Kids?

Your packing list will depend on your destination, the length of your trip, and your children’s ages. Universally useful items often include:

  • Comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes
  • Snacks and refillable water bottles where practical
  • Books, games, headphones, and downloaded entertainment
  • Any necessary medications and a basic travel health and first-aid kit
  • Sunscreen, insect repellent when appropriate, and weather protection
  • Important travel documents and copies of reservations
  • A change of clothes and essential supplies in your carry-on
  • A familiar comfort item for younger children

Check the weather forecast for your destination(s) and planned activities before packing and review your airline’s baggage rules so you know what can go in your carry-on.

How Can I Keep Kids Entertained During a Long Flight?

Prepare a variety of activities rather than relying on one source of entertainment. Download age-appropriate movies or shows, bring books or small games, and consider puzzles, coloring supplies, or travel journals. Snacks and regular opportunities to stretch or walk up the aisle during appropriate moments can also help. For younger children, a familiar toy or comfort item may make the journey feel less overwhelming.

What Documents Do Children Need for International Travel?

Children traveling internationally need their own valid passport, along with any specific visas, parental consent letters, and relationship proof required by the destination country or airline

How Can I Make Airport Travel Easier with Kids?

Allow plenty of time to check in, pass through security, and reach your departure gate. Keep essential items easy to access, including travel documents, snacks, entertainment, medications, and a change of clothes. Explain the airport process to younger children beforehand so they know what to expect. If you are bringing a stroller, car seat, or other child-related equipment, check your airline’s policies before traveling.

What Can I Do If My Child Gets Bored or Tired During Sightseeing?

Alternate major attractions with activities that allow children to participate. Instead of spending an entire day visiting museums or historic landmarks, consider adding a park, a hands-on workshop, a scenic boat ride, or a stop for a local treat. Keep expectations realistic and remember that children may not have the same stamina or interests as adults. A shorter, enjoyable outing can be more rewarding than trying to fit everything into one day. Your Gate 1 Family Tour tour managers and tour guides will help you find this balance along the way!

What Is the Difference Between a Gate 1 Travel Family Tour and a Regular Escorted Tour?

A Family Tour is designed with the needs and interests of children and adults in mind. In addition to sightseeing, these itineraries may feature hands-on cultural activities, outdoor adventures, wildlife experiences, and interactive learning opportunities. Regular escorted tours can also be suitable for families, but their schedules and activities may be designed for a broader adult audience.

What Destinations Are Good for Family-Friendly Guided Tours?

Gate 1 Travel offers Family Tours to a wide variety of destinations including Europe, Asia, Central America, and the United States. After all, our goal is to help travelers of all ages see more of the world for less! Depending on the destination, families can experience wildlife encounters, national parks, cooking activities, cultural workshops, and interactive sightseeing. Reviewing the day-by-day itinerary can help you find a trip that matches your family’s interests and preferred travel style.

Make Your Next Family Adventure Memorable?

Traveling with children can take extra preparation, but when executed, all the hard work is worth it. This experience will give children an everlasting memory of them traveling the world in a way they never have before. By choosing a destination that suits your family, planning thoughtfully, and leaving room for flexibility, you can make the journey enjoyable for everyone.

For families that want help coordinating the details, Gate 1 Travel Family Tours offer a way to explore the world together with planned itineraries and activities designed to engage younger travelers. Robben Island - South Africa's Famous Prison
Africa

Robben Island: South Africa’s Famous Prison

Sitting off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa is a famous tourist destination, known as Robben Island. The island is best known for the prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated, yet it has a rich history dating back 500 years. Today, Robben Island stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It helps remind those of South Africa’s past and its journey towards freedom.

Quick Facts

  • Location: Robben Island, off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa
  • Historical Significance: Former prison, hospital, and military site
  • Apartheid-Era Prison: Used as a maximum-security prison for political prisoners from 1961 to 1991
  • Nelson Mandela: Spent 18 of his 27 years in prison on Robben Island
  • World Heritage Site: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999
  • Today: Preserved as a historic site and museum where visitors can learn about the island’s history and the struggle against apartheid

Early History of Robben Island

Robben Island is approximately five miles off mainland South Africa. The island is quite small, as it has an approximate area of five square miles. The island’s name comes from the Dutch word for “seals” (zeehonden), as seals were once common in its waters. Originally a Dutch settlement, it later served as a prison, hospital for those deemed “socially unfit”, and a military base between the 17th and 20th century.

Robben Island Early History

Inside the Robben Island Prison

The prison consisted of four H-block General Sections, a U-shaped isolation block, a hospital, kitchen, and a dining hall. Each general section contained four general cells designed to hold 52 inmates. The isolation block had about 90 single cells in total. In the 1960s, political and common law prisoners were held together in the general section. They spent their days breaking rocks or working in a glaring lime quarry that caused permanent eye damage for many men. Food was very scarce, as black prisoners received the worst treatment, such as having lower food rations or having to wear degrading clothing.

Nelson Mandela Robben Island

Nelson Mandela’s Years on Robben Island

Nelson Mandela was sent to Robben Island because he was convicted of sabotage and plotting to overthrow the South African apartheid government. During the Rivonia Trial, Mandela received a life sentence. He spent 18 years on Robben Island, from June 1964 to March 1982, as part of his total 27-year sentence. Like the other prisoners, he lived in a tiny, damp cell with only a straw mat to sleep on. Guards even heavily restricted his mail and visits from family or outsiders. Though this was not a positive experience for Mandela, his time in prison on Robben Island became an important part of his story and the broader struggle against the apartheid.

Nelson Mandela Robben Island

Mandela’s Prison Release

By the late 1980s, South Africa faced internal unrest and severe international economic sanctions. This resulted in growing domestic and global pressure on the apartheid government to consider its stance. In 1985, the government did offer Mandela conditional freedom, but he refused it as he wanted to stand by his principles. Finally, in 1990, South African President F.W. de Klerk lifted the ban on the ANC (African National Congress) and ordered Mandela’s unconditional release. Mandela’s release was historic, as many remember him famously walking out of prison together with his wife, Winnie Mandela. Mandela’s freedom then led to negotiations to end apartheid, resulting in the country’s first multiracial democratic elections in 1994, where he was elected president.

Visiting Robben Island is a once and a lifetime opportunity, where travelers can directly visit the location of one of the most historical moments of the last century. See up close what the prison’s living conditions were like while also learning about its impact on South Africa’s government. Everything about this river cruise was Five Star! The cabin was much larger than I remember from before, with plenty of cupboard and drawer space, and the bathroom more generous in size than I remember. The meals were all top-notch and the servers and crew were all amazing. They were skilled, but also cheerful and willing to do anything to make us feel relaxed and having a good time. And our tour manager made everything such fun.

Norway Fjords 1

Discover the Beauty of Norway’s Famous Fjords

Towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear waters, make Norway’s fjords one of the world’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Carved by massive glaciers over thousands of years, these dramatic landscapes have become synonymous with Scandinavian beauty and are a must-see for travelers seeking unforgettable scenery. Gate 1 Travel’s Norway itineraries bring you face-to-face with these incredible destinations, offering the perfect opportunity to experience one of Europe’s most iconic landscapes.

What Are the Norwegian Fjords?

First, what is a fjord? A fjord is a long, narrow, deep-sea inlet framed by steep cliffs or mountains, formed when a glacier carves out a U-shaped valley that fills with ocean water. Other than Norway, they are common in cold, icy regions such as Alaska, Greenland, Iceland, Chile, and New Zealand. What makes Norwegian fjords standout is that the country has over 1,700 deep glacial inlets. Norway also features an UNESCO World Heritage status for sites like Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord. Both destinations feature steep mountainsides, imposing waterfalls, and picturesque tiny villages and farms that cling to the mountains.

Norwegian Fjords

Why Travelers Love the Fjords

Travelers have so much to explore and experience when visiting the Norwegian fjords. These fjords feature rock walls that rise to 1,400 meters above the water and that drop hundreds of meters below the surface. There are also cascading waterfalls, such as the famous drops like the Seven Sisters waterfall plunge directly from high cliffs into the deep channels. The combination of these unique landscapes are views that travelers won’t see anywhere else.

Geiranger Fjord Norway

On top of all that, the fjords have historical appeal too. Travelers will get to see up close how these fjords formed into what they are today from years of retreating glaciers that left behind the deep, water-filled U-shaped valleys. That’s not all, these fjords were also once home to the Vikings. The word ‘fjord’ is originally Old Norse and means “a place used for passage and ferrying”. This makes sense as humans originally settled in Norway after the last ice age, traveling on the water to get around. Many of fjords feature relics of both the Bronze Age and the Viking Age.

Experience Norway’s Fjords with Gate 1 Travel

Gate 1 Travel’s guided tours make exploring Norway’s fjords effortless and enriching. Gate 1 Travel’s 8 Day Norwegian Vistas, Fjords & Glaciers Walking Tour, has travelers walk from Ulvik along the scenic Fruit and Cider route, winding through idyllic orchards nestled between fjords and mountains. Also soak in the panoramic views of Ulvikfjord and the surrounding countryside. The next day, travel to Voss to board the train and journey along one of Norway’s dramatic rail routes to the high-altitude station of Myrdal. Upon arrival, begin your hike down the historic Rallarvegen trail toward Berekvam. This path offers splendid views of deep fjords, rushing rivers, and alpine landscapes. Along the way, encounter peaceful countryside dotted with wildflowers and cascading streams.

Ulvik Norway

Gate 1 Travel’s 11 Day Affordable Norway with 5 Day Scenic Coast Cruise: Mountains, Fjords & Northern Lights Pursuit tour takes travelers on coastal cruise ship that sails through the fjords. Eventually, the ship will dock in Bergen, the unofficial capital of Western Norway, and the world’s only city surrounded by seven mountains and seven fjords.

Fjord Norway

A Journey You’ll Never Forget

Norway’s fjords are more than just beautiful landscapes, they’re among the world’s greatest natural wonders. They are a must-see destination that every traveler should experience at least once. Gate 1 Travel’s guided Norway tours provided the perfect way to discover these remarkable waterways while also exploring the country’s culture, history, and welcoming communities.

2026 FIFA World Cup: A Tournament to Remember

The 2026 World Cup was one for the ages. 16 different host cities,104 matches played, 308 goals scored, all in just 39 days. Cape Verde became the people’s champs, superstars emerged into global names such as Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland, and America turned into a soccer nation for over six weeks. Not only that, but some of the most dominant soccer nations made their mark on this World Cup as well.

Spain

Spain defeated Argentina on July 19 at Metlife Stadium to win the nation’s second ever World Cup. The Spanish nullified Argentina’s attack as they shut them out in a 1-0 win in extra time. Spain was so dominant at one point that Argentina never even had a shot in the first 90 minutes. This is the first time ever that a team in FIFA World Cup final history has done this. After departing the U.S., Spain went home and celebrated in Madrid. Up to 2 million people came out to show the team their support, as the team finished their celebrations with a stage ceremony at Cibeles Square.

Spain 2026 World Cup

Argentina

Though Argentina had won the 2022 World Cup, they were not the favorites heading into the tournament this year. That slowly changed as the team continued to take out foe after foe in dramatic fashion. Led by their captain, Lionel Messi, the team fought all the way to the final match. The 39-year-old finished with 8 goals and 4 assists in 8 World Cup matches, continuing to cement himself as an all-time great in the sport. Some thought he’d get his final wish by winning back-to-back World Cups (something that has only been done twice by Italy and Brazil), but that was not the case. The team finally met its match when playing Spain. Though the team was disappointed, fans showed up to a parade in Buenos Aires to show support.

Argentina 2026 World Cup

England

It has been 60 years since England won their only World Cup in 1966, many thought it would finally be coming home this summer after the team knocked out Norway 2-1 in extra time. England’s main star in this World Cup was Jude Bellingham. The 23-year-old midfielder had a breakout campaign, as he finished with 7 goals (a new single-edition national record). And it wasn’t just the number of goals he scored; it was the importance of them as well. Bellingham bagged 2 goals vs Mexico in the infamous Azteca Stadium known for it’s homefield advantage. He also scored another two against Norway, the second being the extra-time winner that sent England to their fourth semi-final match. Many England fans thought this was the year, but tragedy struck against Argentina. England were up 1-0 by the 55th minute, but the manager, Thomas Tuchel, decided to play a more defensive formation resulting in mass amounts of criticism. By playing more defensive, Tuchel subbed off numerous attackers for defenders hoping it would be enough for England to advance. To much time was left as Argentina scored two late minute goals to win 2-1 to send them to the final. England would go on to defeat France, 6-4, in the third-place match.

England 2026 World Cup

France

France were the favorites heading into this World Cup, and rightfully so. The nation had won the tournament in 2018, then losing it narrowly to Argentina in the 2022 final. The 2026 French team was led by Kilian Mbappe. Mbappe has been the face of the French national team since he broke out as a 19-year-old in the 2018 tournament. Mbappe backed up all the hype as he finished a historic 10-goal tournament campaign, breaking the all-time career record with 22 total World Cup goals. After defeating Morocco 2-0 in the Quarterfinals, France had become the public favorite to win the entire tournament, thanks to Mbappe and the rest of the star-studded French attack. That all came to a halting stop against Spain. Spain controlled the game like they did all tournament, which helped them advance 2-0 vs France. Though this World Cup will be considered a failure for France, the team still has a bright future as Mbappe doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

France 2026 World Cup

An Unforgettable Tournament

The 2026 World Cup was special. For 39 days, the world came together to enjoy the beautiful sport of soccer. Goals were scored, chants were sung, but most importantly, community was fostered across the world.
